The Mullet is a dodgy fish

You know the mullet, right? No, not the fish, the haircut. Anyway, there's this expression about the mullet, describing the hairstyle as "Business up front, Party in the back"

And that's what I think of when I go past this building in Avarua harbour.

One building. One item in common. Two very different... facades.

I came across your blog while doing research on relocating to Rarotonga (I decided April 2008 I wanted to move there by June 2009, but as the months go by I don't seem to make much practical progress all the way from Europe!).

Anyway, I wanted to say a few things -- first of all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your entire blog and think you really should consider "writing that novel" you offhandedly mentioned at the beginning -- your witty observations and point of view made me laugh on more than one occasion and I recognized some of my own frustration with island living (island roosters - worldwide - are my nemeses! Puerto Rican ones are the worst, but I currently live on a Greek island and this little red bastard in particular keeps me from my beauty sleep ;-) Secondly, I was wondering if you have any sage commentary regarding a decision to move LONG TERM to Raro... I know there is a big difference between spending holidays somewhere and living there, but there is also a big leap between living someplace for a year and making a more permanent move there... What are some useful caveats you might have for someone considering longer than a year hiatus?

I am a self-employed artist, freelance writer, and art teacher (you can view my work at www.DoniaLilly.com (art), www.LaNomada.com (writing), www.GreeceArtAdventure.com (art workshops)) so my work location is pretty flexible, but at this point I'm getting hung up on obtaining work papers to be allowed to live there long term. (There's no "self-employment" work visa so I need to find a "real job" of some description to be able to move there.... any suggestions? ;-) Anyway, I know this is a rambling comment, but I truly have enjoyed reading your blog on various levels and this post in particular made me appreciate your brand of humor. I "got it" just from looking at the photo ;-) Thanks again, and best wishes in your life adventures. Maybe we'll bump into each other on Raro someday or on the south island ;-)
cheers,
Donia Lilly
